Lajon's Early Life and Music Journey
Lajon Witherspoon was born in Nashville, Tennessee. He grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, with his parents and his brother, Reginald Ladon Witherspoon. His father was a singer in a funk band when they lived in Nashville.
Before he started making music, Lajon played football and wrestled for Norcross High School. He also practiced judo for several years. However, he eventually chose music as his main passion over sports. He also worked at Hardee's. When he was growing up, Lajon listened to many different artists, including Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, and Stevie Wonder.
How Sevendust Began
Before joining Sevendust, Lajon was the lead singer for a funk rock band called Body & Soul. In 1994, his band played a show where another local band, Snake Nation, was also performing. After hearing Lajon sing, Vinnie Hornsby and Morgan Rose were very impressed. They asked him to sing for their band.
Soon, guitarist John Connolly and Lee Banks joined them, and they formed a band called Rumblefish. They quickly changed the name to Crawlspace. When Lee Banks found the band's schedule too busy, Clint Lowery joined as the new guitarist. The band had to change their name again because another group on the west coast already used "Crawlspace." After thinking of many names, the members decided on Sevendust. This name came about when Vinnie Hornsby found a can of Sevin, which is an insecticide powder, in his grandmother's garage.
A Difficult Time and Solo Music
On November 9, 2002, Lajon's brother, Reginald, who was 23 years old, was sadly shot and killed in Nashville, Tennessee. Lajon heard the news from his father just minutes before Sevendust was supposed to perform in St. Joseph, Minnesota. His father encouraged him to go on with the show and dedicate it to Reginald. Sevendust then postponed all their shows until November 15, when they performed in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire.
Lajon Witherspoon recorded a song called "Ready to Go" for a special music collection released in 2010. He has also released three solo songs: "Love Song," "Black or White," and a cover of "Chainsmoking." Lajon mentioned that "Love Song" felt important because it connected with what was happening in the world at the time.
Lajon's Family Life
