History of Lake Afton

Building the dam for Lake Afton started on December 29, 1939. Workers from the Works Progress Administration (WPA) built it. The WPA was a government program during the Great Depression. It helped people find jobs by building things like roads and parks. The dam was finished in 1941. Lake Afton officially opened to the public in 1945.

Later, in April 1960, a building for young people, called the Sedgwick County Boys Detention Home, was built in the park.

In the late 1970s, the Lake Afton Public Observatory was built. It's on the north side of MacArthur Road within the park. This observatory is a place where people can look at stars and planets!
