What is Lake Aviemore?
Lake Aviemore is a reservoir, which means it's an artificial lake created by building a dam across a river. It was made to store water for the Aviemore Dam, which then uses the water to generate electricity.
How Was the Lake Created?
The lake was formed when the Aviemore Dam was completed in 1968. This dam is the newest of three dams built on the Waitaki River. It is a strong structure made from both earth and concrete.
Where is Lake Aviemore Located?
Lake Aviemore is in the Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island. It used to be on the traditional border between the Canterbury and Otago regions. However, the official border was moved south. This means the lake and the whole northwestern part of the Waitaki District are now fully within the Canterbury Region.
Nearby Settlements
The town of Otematata is located just west of the lake, along State Highway 83. This town was built in 1958. It served as a base for the workers who constructed the Aviemore and Benmore Dams.
Closer to the lake is the old village of Wharekuri. This area was quite busy in the 1860s.
