Location of Lake Granbury, Texas

Lake Granbury is a large, human-made lake in North Texas. It is located near the city of Granbury, Texas. A human-made lake is also called a reservoir.

Lake Granbury was created in 1969. It is one of three lakes that hold back the Brazos River. The De Cordova Bend Dam forms Lake Granbury. It is a long and narrow lake. Its shoreline stretches for 103 miles (221 km). The Brazos River Authority manages Lake Granbury.

Building Lake Granbury

People first thought about building Lake Granbury in the late 1950s. Construction on the De Cordova Bend Dam started on December 15, 1966. The Zachry Construction Company built the dam.

Water began filling the lake on September 15, 1969. The idea of building this dam also inspired a famous book. It was called Goodbye to a River by John Graves.
