Lake Magpie (French: Lac Magpie) is a beautiful lake located in the Côte-Nord region of Quebec, Canada. It forms the middle part of the Magpie River.

Where is Lake Magpie?

Lake Magpie is found in a wild area called Lac-Jérôme. This area is part of the Minganie region in Quebec. It is quite remote! The only way to reach this lake is by a special type of airplane called a float plane. A float plane can land directly on the water.

This area is part of Quebec's natural "ecological regions." Lake Magpie is in a specific sub-region known for its spruce trees and moss. The lake gets its name from a bird called the Canada jay. This bird is closely related to the magpie.

What is Lake Magpie Like?

Lake Magpie is about 80 kilometres (50 mi) (about 50 miles) long. It is a very large and narrow lake. It is also very deep. Several streams flow into the lake from the east and west. The West Magpie River flows into the lake about 50 kilometres (31 mi) above its south end.

The area that drains into the lake, called the catchment area, is 7,201 square kilometres (2,780 sq mi). The amount of water flowing out of the lake changes throughout the year. It can be about 40 cubic metres per second (1,400 cu ft/s) in March. This increases to about 1,000 cubic metres per second (35,000 cu ft/s) in early June.

An old book from 1914, called Dictionnaire des rivières et lacs de la province de Québec, describes Lake Magpie. It says the lake is about 53 miles (85 km) long. It is very deep and full of large northern pike. The lake is surrounded by capes and mountains on both sides.

Protecting Lake Magpie

The lake and the land around it have been protected since June 19, 2003. This means that activities like logging, mining, or building hydroelectric projects are not allowed. There are plans to make this area a special "biodiversity reserve." This helps protect all the different plants and animals that live there.

Fun Activities and Wildlife

A company called Pourvoirie du Lac Magpie offers services for visitors. They have a camp at the north end of the lake. Here, people can enjoy outdoor activities.

  • Fishing: The lake is home to several types of fish. You can find lake trout here. There are also landlocked salmon. And, as mentioned before, large northern pike live in the lake.
  • Hunting: Hunters may also find black bear and moose in the surrounding area.
