Lake Pasteur (French: Lac Pasteur) is a long and narrow lake in the Côte-Nord region of Quebec, Canada. It's shaped a bit like a fjord, which is a deep, narrow inlet of the sea, often with steep sides.

Where is Lake Pasteur?

Lake Pasteur is about 21 kilometres (13 mi) (13 miles) long. It is less than 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) (0.6 miles) wide. The lake covers an area of about 18.8 square kilometres (7.3 sq mi) (7.3 square miles). Its surface is 83 metres (272 ft) (272 feet) above sea level.

This lake is very long and thin. Other lakes in the same area, like Lake Walker, also have this shape. The Pasteur River flows into the north end of the lake. It then flows out from the south end to join the Aux Rochers River.

Lake Pasteur is located in a wild area called Lac-Walker. This area is part of the Sept-Rivières Regional County Municipality. The lake is about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) (6 miles) north of Port-Cartier, a town on the shore of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. The lake was named after Louis Pasteur. He was a famous French scientist who discovered how germs work. He also invented pasteurization, a way to make food safe.

Nature Around the Lake

Lake Pasteur is part of a special protected area. This area is called the proposed Lake Pasteur Biodiversity Reserve. It is located in the Sainte Marguerite Plateau. This plateau is a natural region in the Central Laurentian natural province. The land around the lake is hilly. It is covered with glacial till, which is rock and dirt left behind by glaciers.

The area around the reserve is part of the boreal zone. This means it has a lot of spruce trees and moss. The average temperature in this region is 0 °C (32 °F) (32°F) each year. July is the warmest month, with an average temperature of 16 °C (61 °F) (61°F). January is the coldest, with an average of −16 °C (3 °F) (3°F).

Lake History

In November 1922, a sad accident happened on Lake Pasteur. A boat called the Amoria sank. Early ice on the lake broke through the boat's hull. Ten people lost their lives in this accident. Among them were Father Auguste Tortellier and Doctor Roméo Vézina.
