Lake Wylie is a special kind of community called a census-designated place (CDP). It is located in York County, South Carolina, in the United States. In 2020, about 13,655 people lived here.

Lake Wylie sits on a piece of land that sticks out into Lake Wylie. This lake is a large reservoir (a man-made lake). It was named after Dr. W. Gil Wylie in 1960. The community of Lake Wylie is also a suburb of Charlotte, North Carolina, a much larger city nearby.

Exploring Lake Wylie's Location

Lake Wylie is found on a peninsula that reaches into Lake Wylie. This area is part of the Piedmont region. The Piedmont is a hilly area in both North and South Carolina. The community's exact location is 35°6′22″N 81°3′25″W / 35.10611°N 81.05694°W / 35.10611; -81.05694.

Land and Water Areas

State Line Changes

Because Lake Wylie is very close to the border between North and South Carolina, its location has been affected by new technology. Recently, the state line was re-measured using GPS technology. This process moved the state line about 150 feet (46 meters) south in the Lake Wylie area.

This change meant that some properties in Lake Wylie are now officially in North Carolina. For example, one person's house is in South Carolina, but their back deck is now in North Carolina! A gas station owner also faced problems because gas prices and rules are different in each state.

Growth and Challenges

During the 2010s, many younger families moved to Lake Wylie. They were attracted by lower taxes and good local schools. This rapid growth caused some challenges for the community. Roads became more crowded, and the water supply system was strained. Sometimes, there were boil-water advisories, meaning people had to boil their water before using it.

Because of these issues, York County decided to put a temporary stop on new construction. This allows time to plan how the area can grow better in the future.
