Lake of the Pines is a special community in Nevada County, California, United States. It is known as a "census-designated place" (CDP), which means it's an area defined for counting people. It is also a private, gated neighborhood. In 2010, about 3,917 people lived there.

A Look Back: How Lake of the Pines Started

Lake of the Pines was planned and built by property developers. They started creating this community in the 1960s.

Exploring Lake of the Pines: Location and Features

Lake of the Pines is found in the beautiful foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. It sits at coordinates 39.038571 degrees North and 121.061354 degrees West.

The area defined as the CDP covers about 1.8 square miles (4.7 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 1.5 square miles (3.9 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 0.4 square miles (0.9 square kilometers), is water. This means water makes up about 19% of the total area.

The Lake and Community Layout

The community is built around a reservoir, which is also called Lake of the Pines. This lake was made by building a dam on Magnolia Creek. The lake is part of the Bear River watershed. The highest point of the lake is about 1,507 feet (459 meters) above sea level.

Inside the gated community, there is a golf course. It winds around the lake, offering scenic views. People usually enter the community through its main entrance on Magnolia Road. This road is just northeast of Combie Road.

CDP Boundaries vs. Gated Community

It's interesting to know that the official boundaries of the census-designated place (CDP) are a bit different from the gated community itself. The CDP lines often follow streets. This means the CDP might not include some parts of the gated community. It also includes a shopping center located on Combie Road. Even though Lake of the Pines is in Nevada County, its postal address is considered part of Auburn. Auburn is a city in Placer County.
