Lamoureux (pronounced "LAM-uh-roo") is a small community called a hamlet in central Alberta, Canada. It is part of Sturgeon County. A hamlet is a small settlement, usually smaller than a village.
Lamoureux is located about 6 kilometers (or almost 4 miles) northeast of Edmonton's city limits. From Lamoureux, you can see the old ruins of the original Fort, which are still visible by the river.

Early History of Lamoureux
The area where Lamoureux is located was first settled in 1872. Two brothers, Joseph and Francois Lamoureux, were the first to make their home there.
Building the Community
The Lamoureux brothers were very busy. They built a gristmill, which is a mill for grinding grain into flour. They also built a lumber mill, which cuts wood into planks. These mills and other businesses helped the community grow.
A post office was opened in Lamoureux shortly after February 1896. This made it easier for people in the area to send and receive mail.
A Productive Lumber Mill
The lumber mill in Lamoureux was very successful. For the year ending in October 1895, it was the most productive lumber mill in the entire Edmonton area. It produced lumber worth $15,588.65 at that time. This amount would be worth about $377,505 in Canadian dollars today!
How Many People Live Here?
In 2008, Sturgeon County conducted a special count of its residents. This count is called a municipal census.
