Where is Langstone Located?
Langstone is found on the eastern side of the city of Newport. It is known as one of Newport's wealthier areas. It's also very close to Junction 24 of the M4 motorway, which is a major road. Some parts of Langstone are quite hilly and have lots of trees. It shares borders with other areas like Caerleon to the west and Coldra and Llanwern to the south-west.
How Langstone Grew
The original village of Langstone was a small settlement built along the A48 (Chepstow Road) and Tregarn Road. Since the 1990s, many people have moved here. They like that it feels like the countryside but is also very close to the M4 motorway. Because more people moved in, new houses were built. A large housing area was created at the bottom of Catsash Road. More houses, both big and small, were also built along Tregarn Road and Magor Road.
The Langstone community also includes smaller villages or hamlets. These are Llanbedr, Llandevaud, and Llanmartin.
A Look Back at Langstone's History
In 1801, the village of Langstone itself had 126 people living there. This number grew to 206 by 1901. By the year 2001, the population had increased a lot to 3,905 people.
In 1891, an old book called Kelly's Directory of Monmouthshire mentioned Llanbedr. It said Llanbedr was a small village about one and a half miles north-east of Langstone. It also noted that some parts of an old church were still there, being used for farming.
In July 2018, after a long dry spell, some interesting marks appeared in fields near the village. These "crop marks" showed where an ancient farm used to be. It might have been from prehistoric times or the Roman period. Experts from the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales quickly recorded the site. The marks disappeared again when the rain returned.
The main parish church in Langstone was first built in the 1200s. It was made bigger in the 1500s and 1600s. Then, it was repaired in 1907. It is now a special building called a Grade II listed building. This means it's important for its history and architecture.
