Lani Pallister (born 6 June 2002) is an amazing Australian swimmer. She holds world records in both swimming and life saving. She even set a world record in swimming for the 4×200-metre freestyle relay (short course).

Lani also holds many Australian, Oceanian, and Commonwealth records. She was the first woman to win the 1500-metre freestyle at the World Short Course Championships in 2022. At those championships, she won four gold medals! She also made history as the first Australian woman to win a medal in the 1500-metre freestyle at the World Aquatics Championships.

About Lani Pallister

Lani was born in Sydney, Australia, on 6 June 2002. Her mother, Janelle Pallister, was also an Olympic swimmer. Lani has been coached by her mother since she was young. In 2020, she joined the Griffith University swimming club. There, she is coached by both her mother and Michael Bohl. An interesting fact is that Olympic legend Dawn Fraser is her godmother.

Lani's Swimming Journey

Early Career: 2017–2018

First Junior Championships

In August 2017, when Lani was 15, she competed at the 2017 FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in the United States. She finished eighth in the 1500-metre freestyle. She also placed tenth in the 800-metre freestyle.

Life Saving Records

Lani is also a talented life saver. In August 2018, at age 16, she set a new world record in the 100-metre rescue medley. She broke her own record later that year. In November 2018, she helped Australia win the world title at the World Lifesaving Championships. She also set a new youth world record in the 200-metre super lifesaver event.

Junior Pan Pacific Success

At the 2018 Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Fiji, Lani won three gold medals! She took gold in the 1500-metre, 800-metre, and 400-metre freestyle events. She also earned silver medals in two relay events and the 200-metre freestyle. Her 1500-metre freestyle time set a new championship record.

In August 2019, Lani, then 17, competed at the 2019 FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in Hungary. She won her first medal, a silver, in the 4×200-metre freestyle relay. She then won three gold medals, setting new championship records in the 800-metre, 400-metre, and 1500-metre freestyle events. She also added two more silver medals in relays and the 200-metre freestyle. Lani won a medal in every event she raced, earning three golds and three silvers.

After her amazing performance, Lani was named "Female Swimmer of the Championships" by FINA. She also received the "One to Watch" award at the Australian Women's Health Sport Awards in 2019.

Setting Australian Records

In January 2020, Lani won the Pier to Pub open water swim for the third time in a row. In September, she set a new Australian record in the 800-metre freestyle at the Queensland Short Course Championships. She was the first Australian woman to swim this race in under 8 minutes and 12 seconds.

Later in November 2020, at the Australian Short Course Championships, she broke her own 800-metre freestyle record. She also set new Australian records in the 1500-metre freestyle. Her time made her the fourth fastest female swimmer ever in that race.

Major Competitions: 2022

Australian Championships Success

In May 2022, Lani competed at the 2022 Australian Swimming Championships. She won a gold medal in the 800-metre freestyle, setting a personal best time. This qualified her for the World Aquatics Championships and the Commonwealth Games. She also won gold in the 1500-metre freestyle with another personal best.

At the 2022 World Aquatics Championships, Lani earned a bronze medal in the 1500-metre freestyle. This was a historic moment, as she was the first Australian woman to win a medal in this event at the World Aquatics Championships. She also won a silver medal as part of the 4×200-metre freestyle relay team.

Commonwealth Games Medal

On day four of the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Lani swam in the 800-metre freestyle. She won a bronze medal, finishing behind two other Australian swimmers. She also competed in the 400-metre freestyle, placing fifth.

Lani had an incredible performance at the 2022 World Short Course Championships in Melbourne. She won four gold medals! She took gold in the 400-metre, 800-metre, and 1500-metre freestyle events. She also helped her team win gold and set a new world record in the 4×200-metre freestyle relay. This made her a world record holder in two sports: swimming and life saving. Her godmother, Dawn Fraser, presented her with a medal at the ceremony.

Recent Highlights: 2023–2024

In January 2023, Lani won the Super Fish category at the Pier to Pub open water swim. In April, she won silver medals in both the 800-metre and 400-metre freestyle events at the 2023 Australian Swimming Championships.

2024 Olympics Lani was set to compete at the 2024 Summer Olympics. However, she had to withdraw from the women's 1500m freestyle. This was because she tested positive for Covid-19.
