Lapa is a special area called a barrio in the town of Salinas, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 9,419 people lived there.
One of the most famous places in Lapa is the Monumento al Jíbaro Puertorriqueño. This monument honors the traditional Puerto Rican country folk, known as Jíbaros. You can find it on Highway 52, at kilometer 49.0.
History of Lapa
Puerto Rico used to be controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the United States.
In 1899, the United States government counted all the people living in Puerto Rico. This official count is called a census. The census found that 1,019 people lived in the Lapa barrio at that time.
