The Larder River is a river in Ontario, Canada. It flows through the Timiskaming District in Northeastern Ontario. This river is part of the huge Saint Lawrence River drainage basin. It starts at Larder Lake and ends when it joins the Blanche River.

Where Does the Larder River Flow?

The Larder River begins at Larder Lake. This lake is about 15.6 kilometres (9.7 mi) long and sits at an altitude of 274 metres (899 ft). The lake has different parts, like Southwest Arm, Spoon Bay, and Northeast Arm.

The river flows for about 54.0 kilometres (33.6 mi) from the dam at Larder Lake. It makes its way through several interesting areas.

The Upper Larder River Journey

The first part of the Larder River is about 30.3 kilometres (18.8 mi) long.

  • It flows southeast to Raven Lake. Raven Lake gets water from other lakes in Quebec, like Buies Lake.
  • The river then goes southwest through Raven Lake.
  • Next, it crosses Corset Lake and Ward Lake.
  • It continues southwest into the area of Larder Lake, Ontario.
  • The river then flows across the upper part of Skead Lake. This lake is about 4.0 kilometres (2.5 mi) long.
  • Finally, this section ends at First Falls.

The Lower Larder River Journey

The second part of the Larder River is about 23.7 kilometres (14.7 mi) long.

  • It flows southwest through the lower part of Skead Lake.
  • Then, it goes west across Wendigo Lake.
  • The river continues through Marter Township, passing by Wendigo Falls and Fourth Falls.
  • It also flows through areas known as "Teddy's Falls," "Court Rapids," and "Garnett's Rapids."
  • The Larder River then snakes southwest through the township of Evanturel.
  • It finally meets the Blanche River (Lake Timiskaming) in the Timiskaming District.

The Blanche River then flows into Lake Timiskaming. From there, its waters join the Ottawa River, which eventually leads to the mighty Saint Lawrence River.
