The Blanche River is a cool waterway in northeastern Ontario, Canada. It's part of a huge river system that eventually flows into the Saint Lawrence River. The river gets its name from the French word "blanche," which means "white." It's a key river in the Timiskaming District.
The River's Journey
The Blanche River starts its journey from Sesekinika Lake. This lake is located in a place called Maisonville Township. From there, the river flows west, passing under Ontario Highway 11.
It then turns south and goes through Kenogami Lake. The river passes under Highway 11 again near the small community of Kenogami Lake. It also flows under the Ontario Northland Railway (ONR) tracks.
As it continues, the Blanche River enters the area of Kirkland Lake. It reaches the community of Swastika. The river flows under Ontario Highway 66 and the ONR tracks once more.
Further along, the river passes by Tarzwell on Round Lake. It then goes under Ontario Highway 112. The river enters the township of Chamberlain. Here, it flows under the ONR tracks again.
The Blanche River also passes over some interesting spots like the Eighty Foot Falls and Stuart's Rapids. It then meets two other rivers: the Misema River joins from the left, and the Englehart River joins from the right. These joins happen near the town of Englehart.
The river continues under Ontario Highway 624. Another river, the Larder River, flows into it from the left. The Blanche River then passes through the municipality of Evanturel.
It flows under Ontario Highway 569 near Tomstown. It also passes under Highway 569 again in the township of Hilliard.
Finally, after a brief trip through the townships of Brethour and Casey, the Blanche River flows under Ontario Highway 65 near Judge. It then reaches its end at Paulson Bay. This bay is at the northern part of Lake Timiskaming. Lake Timiskaming is part of the Ottawa River system, which eventually flows into the Saint Lawrence River near Montreal.
Rivers Joining the Blanche
Many smaller rivers and creeks flow into the Blanche River, adding to its water. These are called tributaries. Some of the main ones include:
- Larder River (joins from the left side)
- Englehart River (joins from the right side)
- Misema River (joins from the left side)
- Boston Creek (joins from the left side)
- Lillord Creek (joins from the right side)
