History of Larsmont
Early Settlement and Naming
Larsmont first began as a settlement in 1888. It was located at Milepost 22 on the Duluth and Iron Range Railroad. The community was founded by immigrants from Finland-Swedish backgrounds. They came from a place called Larsmo in Ostrobothnia, which is a historical region in Finland.
The settlers wanted to name their new home "Larsmo" after their original town. However, officials did not approve this name. Instead, they chose "Larsmont." Later, more residents moved to Larsmont from Munsala, another area in Nykarleby, Finland.
The Great Cloquet Fire of 1918
On October 12, 1918, a large and destructive wildfire, known as the 1918 Cloquet Fire, reached Larsmont. The fire burned down the hillside all the way to the railroad tracks. People who lived on the hillside had to find safety in homes along the lakeshore. Six cars of Home Guards, who were like local volunteers, came from Two Harbors to help fight the fire and protect the community.
Post Office and ZIP Code Changes
Larsmont had its own post office established in 1916. In 1963, the community was given the ZIP code 55610. However, this ZIP code was later retired on November 1, 1978, and the post office in Larsmont closed. Today, Larsmont uses the ZIP code 55616, which is based out of nearby Two Harbors.
