What Happens in the Episode?
Building a Backyard Beach
Danville is having a very hot day. Phineas and Ferb are super tired from the heat. They decide to build a beach in their backyard. This idea comes after hearing a radio DJ talk about the heat.
Their sister, Candace, wants to tell their mom about their big project. But when their mom first looks, she only sees a small sandbox. She doesn't think much of it.
Later, Phineas and Ferb finish building a huge beach! Everyone in the neighborhood comes to cool off and have fun. This includes Isabella and her Fireside Girls troop.
Candace sees the finished beach and again plans to tell her mom. But then she finds out that Jeremy, a boy she likes, is coming to surf at the beach. So, she decides to stay. Candace starts to enjoy the beach herself. She even becomes "Queen Wahini" after accidentally doing a perfect limbo dance. Jeremy notices her, which makes her even happier.
Perry's Secret Mission
While the boys are building, their pet platypus, Perry, is on a secret mission. He is a secret agent known as Agent P. He is investigating why so many lawn gnomes are disappearing across the tri-state area.
Perry discovers that his enemy, Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz, is behind the gnome thefts. Perry goes into Doofenshmirtz's secret underground hideout. Doofenshmirtz quickly captures him.
Doofenshmirtz explains his plan through a video. When he was a child, his family lost their lawn gnome. He believed this gnome protected them. Because of this, his father made young Doofenshmirtz dress as a gnome. He had to stand in their garden all day, unable to move. Doofenshmirtz now wants revenge for this difficult childhood experience. He plans to destroy all the lawn gnomes he has stolen.
The Gnome-pocalypse!
Perry soon escapes from Doofenshmirtz's trap. They start to fight, which accidentally causes the machine holding all the gnomes to break down. The machine releases all the stolen lawn gnomes!
The gnomes fly out and crash onto the backyard beach. Everyone at the beach panics and runs away from the "gnomeageddon." The beach is completely destroyed.
Candace is still trying to convince her mom not to come outside. She doesn't realize the beach is gone. When she tries to show her mom the beach, she finds only their normal backyard. Candace feels very sad. But Phineas and Ferb think it was a successful day. Isabella and Linda help Candace go inside.
At the end, the radio DJ from the beginning congratulates Phineas and Ferb. He says tomorrow will also be hot and sunny. Ferb then adds, "with a slight chance of scattered lawn gnomes." Phineas laughs. The camera zooms out, showing the gnomes that crashed onto the Flynn-Fletcher house roof.
How the Episode Was Made

"Lawn Gnome Beach Party of Terror" was written by the creators of Phineas and Ferb, Dan Povenmire and Jeff "Swampy" Marsh. They worked with Bobby Gaylor and Martin Olson on the script. Dan Povenmire also directed the episode.
It first aired on Disney Channel on September 28, 2007. It was one of two special preview episodes for the series.
Vincent Martella, the actor who voices Phineas, said this episode was one of his favorite parts of working on the show. He shared a story in Popstar! Magazine about watching the episode on New Year's Eve with his family. He noticed both his ten-year-old brother and his adult relatives laughing. He said that experience was "the greatest thing in the world."
This episode was also used in a 2008 Disney Channel event called "Spot the Diff." In this event, Doofenshmirtz used his "Change-inator-inator" to change scenes from certain episodes. Viewers had to spot the differences for an online quiz. When "Lawn Gnome Beach Party of Terror" aired in this marathon, it was unchanged. However, it was shown after a changed episode called "Lawn Gnome Beach Party of Error."
The episode was included on the DVD called Phineas and Ferb: The Fast and the Phineas in 2008. This DVD also had other first-season episodes. A fun bonus game on the DVD was "Whack-A-Gnome." In this game, you hit gnomes as they pop up, like the game Whac-A-Mole.
The song "Backyard Beach" from the episode was featured on the official Phineas and Ferb soundtrack, released in 2009. In the same year, the online store Zazzle sold merchandise based on the episode.
