Ferbs "Ferb" Fletcher is a fun character from the cartoon show Phineas and Ferb. He is voiced by British actor Thomas Sangster in the original series. Later, American actor David Errigo Jr. voiced him in Milo Murphy's Law and Candace Against the Universe. The show's creators, Dan Povenmire and Jeff "Swampy" Marsh, made Ferb. He first appeared in the very first episode, "Rollercoaster", which came out in 2007. Ferb's birthday is on February 29.
Ferb and his step-brother Phineas Flynn love to have exciting adventures during their summer vacation. In most episodes, they build huge inventions or do other amazing things. Ferb is a super smart engineer. He usually lets Phineas do most of the talking, as Ferb is "more of a man of action." When Ferb does speak, it's usually just one short sentence. In a future episode called "Phineas and Ferb's Quantum Boogaloo", we find out he visited Camp David.
Ferb was named after a friend of the creators, Frank Leasure. Frank was a set-builder who worked on Star Trek shows. Frank's wife, Melinda, nicknamed him "Ferb". In one episode, "Vanessassary Roughness", Ferb tries to explain what his name is short for, but he doesn't get to finish. Later, Dan Povenmire said on Twitter that "Ferb" is actually short for "Ferbs". Ferb cares a lot about Vanessa Doofenshmirtz, who is the daughter of Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz. He even saves her from a giant lawn mower in one episode! In "Summer Belongs To You", Vanessa asks Candace what Ferb's name is short for, and Candace realizes she doesn't know either. In a later episode, "Act Your Age", a teenage Ferb seems to be in a relationship with Vanessa. Ferb's design looks like a rectangle and also like the letter "F". His look was inspired by the style of the famous animator Tex Avery. Ferb is a popular character and you can find him on toys, T-shirts, and in video games.

Ferb's Role in the Show
Ferb is part of a blended family. The creators thought this was a good idea for a kids' show, and it was like Jeff Marsh's own childhood. We never find out about Ferb's birth mother, but we know Ferb and his dad, Lawrence, are from the United Kingdom. Lawrence married Ferb's step-mother, Linda, after they met at a concert in the 1990s. Marsh said that explaining the family history isn't important. What matters is that they are a great blended family. Ferb and his family live in a made-up town called Danville.
During their summer break, Ferb and Phineas come up with amazing plans to avoid being bored. They often sit under a tree in their backyard and dream up new ideas. Phineas usually thinks of the projects, and Ferb helps build them. Their projects are usually things that regular kids couldn't do. For example, they have designed toys, hunted for treasure, built time machines, and even managed a restaurant! Their step-sister, Candace, always tries to tell their mom about their wild plans, but she never succeeds. Ferb doesn't talk much. He usually says only one line per episode and has a British accent. There are 11 episodes where he doesn't speak at all. The longest he ever spoke was in "The Lizard Whisperer", where he gave a speech that was 129 words long.
About Ferb's Character
How Ferb Was Created
Ferb was created by the co-creators of Phineas and Ferb, Dan Povenmire and Jeff "Swampy" Marsh. They first met while working on The Simpsons. Phineas and Ferb was inspired by their own childhood summer vacations. Povenmire and Marsh felt that too many TV shows were about school, so they wanted to make a show that only took place in the summertime.
Ferb's name came from a friend of Povenmire and Marsh named Frank. Frank was a set-builder who built sets for shows like Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Frank's wife didn't like his name and gave him the unusual nickname "Ferb".
Ferb's Design and Voice
"We knew Thomas Sangster from Love Actually and Nanny McPhee and he was able to express so much. But he did it in a studio in London and never met or saw anybody else working on the show. He'd seen one episode where somebody else was the voice that he had to portray and he just got it." |

Ferb was designed to be simple so that young viewers could draw him easily. Like other characters in Phineas and Ferb, Ferb's design uses basic shapes. This is a tribute to the animator Tex Avery. Ferb's head is shaped like a rectangle, wider at the top. His nose is a square, and his eyes are like ovals. The eye furthest away from the viewer is always drawn bigger. Dan Povenmire has a nine-step process to draw Ferb, starting with his head.
Originally, another actor named Mitchel Musso was going to voice Ferb. But when Phineas and Ferb became a full series, Povenmire and Marsh decided to make Ferb British. So, they chose Thomas Sangster to be his voice. They liked Mitchel Musso so much that they gave him another role as Jeremy Johnson. Sangster is a British actor, and many other cast members were also from England. Jeff Marsh himself had lived in England for seven years and liked the culture there.
Ferb's Personality
Ferb was created to be a character who never means any harm. Jeff Marsh explained that it was important for Phineas and Ferb to never do anything mean. They never tried to get their sister in trouble or trick their mom. Instead, they build things just for fun or to help others. For example, they carved Candace's face into Mount Rushmore for her birthday. They also made a roller derby track for their grandmother's rematch race. They even built a haunted house to help their friend Isabella with her hiccups.
Povenmire and Marsh wanted Ferb's desire to create things to come from wanting to have fun. In one episode, "Thaddeus and Thor", Phineas says that their only goal is to have fun. Ferb then adds that they also do it "for the ladies."
In the early stages of the show, Ferb didn't speak at all. But after thinking about famous duos like Wallace and Gromit, the creators decided Ferb should speak at least once in most episodes. However, he usually stays quiet and lets Phineas do the talking. Even though Ferb is quiet, he is very smart. He can speak many languages, including human, animal, and even alien languages!
Ferb also seems to have great understanding. This is a main difference between him and Phineas, besides his quietness. Jean Yoo, from Disney Channel, said that when Ferb does speak, "it always shows a greater understanding of the situation." Ferb also seems to prefer singing over talking. He often says one sentence per episode, like "Platypuses are the only mammals to lay eggs." He also has a crush on Vanessa Doofenshmirtz.
Ferb in Other Media
Besides the TV show, Ferb has appeared in many other Phineas and Ferb products. He is in all the Phineas and Ferb books, published by Disney Press. Ferb also appears in the Nintendo DS video game called Phineas and Ferb.
Plush toys of Ferb, Phineas, and Perry have been made. Ferb also appears on most of the Phineas and Ferb T-shirts. Costumed versions of Ferb and Phineas have appeared at Disneyland for the annual Walt Disney World Christmas Day Parade.
