Lawrence Dundas was an important British politician. He was born on August 16, 1844, and passed away on March 11, 1929. Before 1873, people knew him as Lawrence Dundas. Later, he became the Earl of Zetland. From 1889 to 1892, he held a very important job in Ireland. He was the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, representing the Queen there. Early Life and School Days
Lawrence Dundas was born in London. His father was John Charles Dundas. Lawrence went to two famous schools. He studied at Harrow and later at Trinity College, Cambridge.
Military Service
In 1866, Lawrence Dundas joined the Royal Horse Guards. He started as a Cornet, which is a junior officer rank. By 1869, he became a Lieutenant. He left the army in 1872.
His Political Journey
In 1872, Lawrence Dundas became a Member of Parliament (MP). He represented the area of Richmond, North Yorkshire. He served in the House of Commons for less than a year. This was because he inherited the title of Earl of Zetland from his uncle.
At first, he supported the Liberals. But in 1884, he decided to join the Conservative Party.
Lord Lieutenant of Ireland
In 1889, Lawrence Dundas was sent to Ireland. He became the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. This was a very important role. He represented the British monarch in Ireland. He was also made a Knight of the Order of Saint Patrick that same year. People thought he did a good job and was well-liked. He stayed in this role until 1892. That's when the Liberal Party came back into power.
In 1889, he also joined the Privy Council. This is a group of important advisors to the monarch. In 1892, he received new titles. He became the Earl of Ronaldshay and the Marquess of Zetland.
Local Politics and Other Interests
In the 1890s, Lord Zetland became more involved in local government. In 1894, he became an alderman. This is a senior member of the North Riding of Yorkshire County Council. He was also elected Mayor of Richmond in 1895 and 1896. In 1900, he was made a Knight of the Thistle.
Lord Zetland was also interested in other activities. He was a freemason, like his uncle and grandfather. He was a leader for the freemasons in North and East Yorkshire for many years. He also loved sports. He was the Master of the Zetland Hunt for 35 years.
Family Life
Lord Zetland married Lady Lilian Selina Elizabeth Lumley. They got married on August 3, 1871. She was born in 1851 and passed away in 1943. They had five children together:

- Thomas Dundas, Lord Dundas (born and died in 1874, as a baby)
- Lawrence John Lumley Dundas, 2nd Marquess of Zetland (born 1876, died 1961)
- Lady Maud Frederica Elizabeth Dundas (born 1877, died 1967)
- Lord George Heneage Lawrence Dundas (born 1882, died 1968)
Later Years and Passing
Lord Zetland passed away in 1929. He was 84 years old. He died at Aske Hall, in Yorkshire, and was buried there. His oldest living son, Lawrence, took over his titles. Lady Zetland, his wife, passed away later in 1943.
