Layhill's Past: A Look Back

Argyle Country Club's Journey

The Argyle Country Club started in 1921 in a different part of Maryland. It moved a few times before finding its permanent home in Layhill. The club officially opened at its current Layhill spot on June 28, 1947.

A Secret Still in 1932

In 1932, during a time when making and selling alcohol was against the law, police found a secret setup in Layhill. They discovered equipment used to make illegal drinks. Police arrested a man named Alfred Crum in connection with this discovery.

Plans for a Drive-In Movie

In 1955, there were plans to build a large drive-in movie theater in Layhill. It would have been big enough for 1,300 cars. However, some people living nearby did not want it. Because of their objections, the plan for the drive-in theater was stopped.

How Layhill Grew: New Neighborhoods

Layhill has grown over the years with many new neighborhoods. Layhill South was built in 1963. Layhill Village and Layhill Forest followed in 1965. The Strathmore at Bel Pre neighborhood was added in 1968, and Chaddsford in 1969. More recently, Parker Farm was developed in 1994.

Plaza del Mercado: A Place to Shop

Plaza del Mercado is a shopping center in Layhill. It first opened its doors in October 1969. Some of the original stores included Giant Food, Peoples Drug, McDonald's, and a Hallmark Card Shop. A new grocery store, Aldi, opened there in December 2016.

The Old Oak Tree

In 1988, Layhill Road was made wider. This project unfortunately led to the removal of a very old and tall oak tree. This tree was 225 years old and stood 67 feet high, making it a well-known landmark in the community.

Where is Layhill Located?

Layhill is a community without exact borders because it's not an official town. However, the center of the community is generally considered to be where Layhill Road meets Bonifant Road and Bel Pre Road.

Middle Schools

Most high school students in Layhill are assigned to John F. Kennedy High School.

Getting Around Layhill

Major Roads

The Intercounty Connector, also known as Maryland Route 200, runs through the northern part of Layhill. You can get onto this road from Exit 10, which is on MD 182.

Public Transportation

The Glenmont Metro station is about 2 miles south of Layhill. This underground train station opened in 1998. It is the last stop on the Red Line and has large parking garages. From Glenmont, the Red Line travels to downtown Silver Spring and into Washington, D.C., before heading back into Montgomery County.
