The League of Lezhë was a special group formed by different Albanian leaders. It started on March 2, 1444, in a town called Lezhë. This was a big moment because it was the first time many parts of Albania came together as one country. The main goal of the League was to fight against the powerful Ottoman Empire and protect their lands.

What Was the League of Lezhë?

The League of Lezhë was like a team or a confederation of different Albanian noble families. These families ruled their own areas, called principalities. They decided to join forces to face a common enemy. This union helped them to be stronger together than they were apart.

Why Was the League Formed?

In the 15th century, the Ottoman Empire was growing very powerful. They were expanding their lands and threatening many countries in Europe, including Albania. The Albanian leaders knew they needed to unite to defend their homes and their people. The League of Lezhë was their answer to this big threat.

Who Was Skanderbeg?

Skanderbeg, also known as Gjergj Kastrioti, was the most important leader of the League of Lezhë. He was a brave and clever military commander. Skanderbeg had been trained by the Ottomans, but he returned to Albania to fight for his people's freedom. He became the commander-in-chief of the League's armies. Under his leadership, the Albanians won many important battles against the Ottomans.

How Did the League Work?

The leaders of the League met in Lezhë to make important decisions. They agreed to work together and share their resources. Each leader kept control over their own lands, but they all contributed soldiers and money to the League's army. Skanderbeg was chosen to lead this combined army. The League lasted for many years, from 1444 until 1479.

Important Battles and Challenges

The League of Lezhë fought many battles against the Ottoman Empire. These wars were very difficult, but the League often surprised the Ottomans with their strong resistance. Even after Skanderbeg passed away in 1468, the League continued to fight for a while. However, without their great leader, it became harder to keep the union strong.

The End of the League

The League of Lezhë officially ended in 1479. By this time, the Ottoman Empire had become too powerful. They eventually took control of most of Albania. Even though the League ended, it is remembered as a very important part of Albanian history. It showed how different groups could come together to fight for their freedom.
