Lee Eul-yong's Early Days
Lee Eul-yong was born in Taebaek, a city in Gangwon, South Korea. He went to high school in Gangneung. During his school years, he played a lot of football. However, he didn't get into a university football club right away. For a short time, he stopped playing. But then, he got an exciting offer to join a semi-professional team called Korea Railroad. This was his big chance to get back into the game! Interestingly, his son, Lee Tae-seok, also became a football player.
Playing for South Korea
Lee Eul-yong was a key player for the South Korean national team. He played in the exciting 2002 FIFA World Cup. He was great at making accurate kicks, especially free-kicks. During the World Cup, he helped his team a lot. He made two important passes that led to goals against Poland and the United States. He even scored a goal from a free-kick against Turkey. After the World Cup, he moved to a Turkish team called Trabzonspor.
In September 2006, after playing a match against Chinese Taipei, Lee Eul-yong decided to stop playing for the national team. He wanted to focus on his club team, FC Seoul. He also wanted to give younger players a chance to join the national team for the upcoming 2010 FIFA World Cup.
The "Eul-yong Ta" Moment
Lee Eul-yong is famous among football fans in South Korea and other parts of Asia for a special moment. It's often called "Eul-yong Ta" (Hangul: 을용타), which means something like 'Eul-yong Strike' or 'Eul-yong Smash'. This happened during a game against China in December 2003.
During the game, a Chinese player named Li Yi kicked Lee Eul-yong's leg after Lee had passed the ball. Lee was not happy about this. In response, he playfully tapped Li Yi on the back of his head. Li Yi then fell to the ground, holding his head as if he was really hurt, which many people thought was an exaggeration. Players from both teams rushed over, but the situation didn't get worse. The referee gave Li Yi a yellow card and Lee Eul-yong a red card, meaning Lee had to leave the game. South Korea still won the match. This moment became a very popular internet meme in South Korea.
