Leon Bates was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. From a very young age, he showed a great talent for music. By the time he was six years old, he was already excelling at playing both the piano and the violin.

As a young musician, Leon Bates learned from some wonderful teachers. He was taught by Irene Beck and later studied with Natalie Hinderas. She was a professor at the Esther Boyer College of Music at Temple University in Philadelphia.
