The Lesser Poland Voivodeship, also called Małopolska Province, is a special region in southern Poland. Think of a voivodeship like a large state or province. It covers about 15,108 square kilometers. In 2006, about 3.2 million people lived here. This region was officially created on January 1, 1999. The main city and capital of Lesser Poland is Kraków.
This area has many natural boundaries. To the north, you'll find the Świętokrzyskie Mountains. To the west, there's a hilly area called Jura Krakowsko-Częstochowska. It stretches from Kraków all the way to Częstochowa. In the south, you can see the tall Tatra, Pieniny, and Beskidy Mountains. Lesser Poland shares its borders with other Polish regions. These include the Silesian Voivodeship to the west, Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship to the north, and Subcarpathian Voivodeship to the east. To the south, it borders the country of Slovakia.
