Lewis John Carlino (born January 1, 1932 – died June 17, 2020) was an American writer and director for movies and plays. He worked for over 50 years, creating many well-known films. Some of his famous works include The Fox, The Mechanic, and The Great Santini. Carlino was nominated for many important awards, like the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Early Theatrical Work

One of Lewis John Carlino's first projects was a play called The Brick and the Rose; a collage for voices. It was published in December 1957. The play was first performed in Hollywood, California, that same year.

The script for The Brick and the Rose became available for other theater groups in 1959. It was even shown on television as part of the CBS Repertoire Workshop in January 1960. Carlino continued to write plays, and many of his scripts were published and performed in different theaters.

Writing and Directing Films

Carlino's first writing job for television was for the series Route 66 in 1963. In the same month, he was hired to write the movie Seconds. This film was a thriller about a secret organization. It was shown at the 1966 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for the top prize, the Palme d'Or.

Carlino then worked with another writer, Howard Koch, to adapt a story called The Fox into a movie. The 1967 film The Fox won a Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Film. Carlino and Koch were also nominated for a Golden Globe for their screenplay.

In 1968, Carlino was nominated for a Writers Guild of America Award for his screenplay for The Brotherhood. This movie starred Kirk Douglas.

The Mechanic and The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea

Lewis John Carlino wrote the original story and screenplay for the 1972 film The Mechanic. This action movie starred Charles Bronson. The film is known for having no talking for the first 16 minutes. It also has a surprising ending.

In 1976, Carlino adapted a Japanese novel called The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea into a movie. He also directed this film, which starred Kris Kristofferson.

Award-Winning Screenplays

Carlino and Gavin Lambert were nominated for an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1977. This was for their work on the movie I Never Promised You a Rose Garden. They also received a Writers Guild of America Award nomination for the same film.

Carlino wrote and directed The Great Santini, which was based on a novel. The movie is about a United States Marine Corps officer who is a great pilot but struggles as a husband and father.
