Exploring Liberty Corner's Past
How Liberty Corner Got Its Name
Back in 1722, this area was first known as "Annin's Corner." It was named after a main landowner, John Annin. During the American Revolution, the name was changed to "Liberty Corner." This new name showed the strong desire for freedom during that time.
French Army Camp in Liberty Corner
On August 29, 1781, an important event happened here. The First Brigade of the French Army, called the Expédition Particulière, camped in Liberty Corner. They stayed near Bullion's Tavern. This army was led by the French general Comte de Rochambeau.
They were on their way to Yorktown, Virginia, for a major battle. The very next day, they continued their march to a campground in Millstone. The American Continental Army also marched nearby, helping with this important joint effort.
Bonnie Brae School: A Place for Boys
The Bonnie Brae School for boys is located in this area. It started in 1916 as a "working farm" for boys. It was originally an orphanage, providing a home and education. Today, the school helps boys who have faced emotional challenges.
Liberty Corner Historic District
The Liberty Corner Historic District is a special area in the village. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 11, 1991. This district is important because it shows how the community developed. It also features interesting architecture from 1865 to 1935.
