Liberty Lake is a beautiful lake located in Spokane County, in the U.S. state of Washington. This lake is a favorite spot for people who love to fish and enjoy the outdoors. It sits about 800 feet (0.25 km) south of the city that shares its name, Liberty Lake. The lake is also an important part of the Spokane Valley–Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer, which is a huge underground water source.

What Makes Liberty Lake Special?

Liberty Lake is known for its clear waters and the fun activities it offers. It's a relatively small lake, covering about 1.1 square miles (2.9 square kilometers). The deepest part of the lake is about 30 feet (9.1 meters) deep, but its average depth is around 25 feet (7.6 meters).

Water Flow and Connections

The main water source flowing into Liberty Lake is Liberty Creek. The water from the lake then flows out in two ways: through a small unnamed stream and into the Spokane Valley–Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer. This aquifer is like a giant sponge underground that holds a lot of water, providing drinking water for many communities. It takes about three years for all the water in Liberty Lake to be completely replaced, which is called its "residence time."

Fishing Fun at Liberty Lake

Liberty Lake is a very popular place for fishing! The fishing season here usually runs from March 1 to October 31. This gives anglers plenty of time to try and catch different kinds of fish.

Types of Fish You Can Catch

When the fishing season starts in March, it's a great time to look for the tricky brown trout. As the weather gets warmer and the lake water heats up, other fish become more active. You might catch largemouth and smallmouth bass, or yellow perch.

Other types of fish that live in Liberty Lake include:

Best Times to Fish

  • Spring: Early spring, especially March, is ideal for brown trout.
  • Summer: As the water warms up, bass and perch are more common.
  • Fall: Fishing can still be good in the fall, especially for trout.

Recreational Activities

Besides fishing, Liberty Lake offers many other ways to enjoy the outdoors. People often come here for swimming, boating, and simply relaxing by the water. There are also parks and trails nearby that are great for hiking and exploring nature. The lake's beautiful surroundings make it a perfect spot for family outings and outdoor adventures.
