Lichty is a small, unincorporated community located in Yakima County, Washington, in the United States. It's nestled between the towns of Sunnyside and Grandview, right along U.S. Route 12. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.
The Story of Lichty
How Lichty Got Its Name
Before it was called Lichty, this area had a different name: Esjay. The name changed in 1907. This happened when the North Yakima and Valley Railway Company finished building their railway line to Sunnyside.
The community was then named after the Peter J. Lichty family. Their land was used to build the railway tracks. So, the name Lichty honors this family who lived there.
A Short-Lived Post Office
For a few years, Lichty even had its own post office. It opened on July 11, 1913. However, it didn't stay open for very long. The post office closed its doors on February 15, 1917.
