Lidingö (Swedish pronunciation: [ˈlîːdɪŋˌøː]) is a beautiful island in Sweden. It is located northeast of Stockholm, in an area called the inner Stockholm archipelago. Many people live here, and it is where the local government for Lidingö Municipality is located.

Lidingö is known for being a home to many famous people. This includes members of the supergroup ABBA, like Björn Ulvaeus and Agnetha Fältskog. The island has some very nice areas, especially along the coast. Even though many people have moved to the island, Lidingö Municipality remains one of the wealthiest areas in Sweden.

History of Lidingö Island

Ancient Runes: Messages from the Past

Two ancient runic inscriptions have been discovered on Lidingö. Runes are special letters used in early Germanic languages. The most recent rune stone was found in 1984. It was hidden under a layer of soil and moss.

This inscription is from the Viking Age, which was around 800 to 1050 AD. The message on the stone says: "Åsmund carved runes in memory of his grandfather Sten, father of Sibbe and Gerbjörn...a great monument over a good man." The stone also shows pictures of large snakes and a Maltese cross. These were common designs on Viking Age rune stones.

Lidingö's Story Through the Centuries

About 300 to 400 years after the runes were carved, people on Lidingö started building small farms. The island is first mentioned in writing in 1328. It was in a document that talked about a "Lidingö farm."

Later, a powerful person named Bo Jonsson (Grip) bought the entire island between 1376 and 1381. Around 1480, the Banér family took over the island. In 1774, Johan Gabriel Banér sold the whole island, and the land was then divided into 25 different farms.

In the eastern part of Lidingö, there is a special place called the Långängen-Elfvik nature reserve. This reserve includes a large area of open farmland and forests. It is home to one of the oldest farms, the Elfviks farm. Many of the original farmhouses, built between the late 1700s and mid-1800s, have been saved and restored. Today, the farm is still active with animals like beef cattle, sheep, and horses. The Lidingö Municipality manages it.

The first church on Lidingö was built in 1623. In the 1960s, a large educational center for IBM (a famous computer company) was built near the Elfvik farm. This center was later turned into a hotel.
