Black swamp snakes love wet places. They prefer swampland areas. These areas usually have lots of plants and thick vegetation. This helps them stay hidden and safe.
What Do They Look Like?
The black swamp snake is a small and thin snake. It usually grows to be about 25 to 38 centimeters (10 to 15 inches) long. The longest one ever found was about 55 centimeters (22 inches). Its back is a solid black color. But its belly is a bright orange or red. This makes it easy to spot!
How Do They Behave?
This snake spends almost all its time in the water. It is very good at swimming and hiding. You will often find it among thick plants in dark-water swamps. These are swamps where the water looks like tea.
What Do They Eat?
The black swamp snake has a varied diet. It eats small fish and tadpoles. It also enjoys frogs and salamanders. Other meals include sirens and amphiumas. Sometimes, it eats invertebrates like leeches and earthworms.
How Do They Have Babies?
Black swamp snakes are ovoviviparous. This means they give birth to live young. The babies are born directly into shallow water. Female snakes eat a lot while they are pregnant. This might mean they pass nutrients directly to their babies. A mother snake can have 11 to 13 babies at a time. Newborns are tiny, about 11 to 14 centimeters (4 to 5 inches) long.
