Lisa Cholodenko is a talented American filmmaker. She is known for writing and directing movies and TV shows. Some of her well-known films include High Art (1998), Laurel Canyon (2002), and The Kids Are All Right (2010).

Early Life and Education
Lisa Cholodenko grew up in the San Fernando Valley, California. She came from a Jewish family.
She studied at San Francisco State University. There, she earned a degree in anthropology and ethnic studies. She even worked as a teaching assistant for Angela Davis. In the early 1990s, Lisa gained experience in filmmaking. She was an apprentice editor for the movie Boyz n the Hood. She also helped edit other films like Used People and To Die For.
In 1997, Lisa earned a master's degree from Columbia University School of the Arts. She studied screenwriting and directing there. During her time at Columbia, she made several short films. These included Souvenir (1994) and Dinner Party (1997). Dinner Party won an award and was shown on TV in several countries.

Directing Movies
While at Columbia University, Lisa wrote and directed her first major film, High Art. This movie won an award for its screenplay at the Sundance Film Festival. It also received praise for Ally Sheedy's acting. High Art was first shown at the Cannes Director's Fortnight.
Her next film was Laurel Canyon. It starred famous actors like Frances McDormand and Christian Bale. This movie also premiered at Cannes Director's Fortnight. It was nominated for several Independent Spirit Awards.
In 2004, Lisa directed the film Cavedweller for Showtime. Actors Kyra Sedgwick and Aidan Quinn received nominations for their roles in this film.
Lisa then co-wrote and directed The Kids Are All Right. This film was a big success. Lisa was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. The movie itself was nominated for three other Academy Awards, including Best Picture. It won a Golden Globe for Best Picture in the Comedy or Musical category. Lisa directed this film in just 23 days with a budget of $3.5 million.
Directing Television Shows
In 2014, Lisa Cholodenko directed the HBO miniseries Olive Kitteridge. This show starred Frances McDormand and Richard Jenkins. It was based on a popular novel by Elizabeth Strout.
