Lisa Cholodenko (born June 5, 1964) is an American filmmaker. She is known for writing and directing movies and TV shows. Some of her famous works include the films High Art (1998), Laurel Canyon (2002), and The Kids Are All Right (2010).

She has also directed popular TV miniseries like Olive Kitteridge (2014) and Unbelievable (2019). Lisa Cholodenko has received many awards for her work. She has been nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. She has won an Emmy and a DGA Award.

Early Life and Education

Lisa Cholodenko grew up in the San Fernando Valley, California. She came from a family with Jewish heritage. Her grandfather on her father's side moved to the United States from Ukraine.

She went to San Francisco State University and earned a degree in anthropology and ethnic studies. While there, she was a teaching assistant for the famous activist Angela Davis.

In the early 1990s, Lisa Cholodenko started her career in film. She worked as an apprentice editor on John Singleton's movie Boyz n the Hood. She also helped edit other films like Used People, The Lawnmower Man, and To Die For.

In 1997, she earned a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree from Columbia University School of the Arts. This degree focused on screenwriting and directing. During her time at Columbia, she wrote and directed several short films. These included Souvenir (1994) and Dinner Party (1997). Dinner Party even won an award and was shown on TV in the UK, France, and Switzerland.

Movies She Directed

While still at Columbia University, Lisa Cholodenko wrote and directed her first full-length movie, High Art. This film won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the Sundance Film Festival. It also received an award for Ally Sheedy's acting. High Art was first shown at the Cannes Director's Fortnight festival.

Her next movie was Laurel Canyon. It starred famous actors like Frances McDormand, Christian Bale, and Kate Beckinsale. This film also premiered at Cannes Director's Fortnight. It was nominated for several Independent Spirit Awards.

In 2004, Cholodenko directed the film Cavedweller for the TV network Showtime. The actors Kyra Sedgwick and Aidan Quinn received Independent Spirit Award nominations for their roles in this movie.

Lisa Cholodenko then co-wrote and directed The Kids Are All Right. This movie was a big success. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. The film itself was nominated for three other Academy Awards, including Best Picture. It won a Golden Globe for Best Picture in the Comedy or Musical category. The movie was filmed in just 23 days with a budget of $3.5 million.

Television Work

In 2014, Lisa Cholodenko directed the HBO miniseries Olive Kitteridge. This four-part series starred Frances McDormand and Richard Jenkins. It was based on a popular novel by Elizabeth Strout. Other actors in the show included Bill Murray and Jesse Plemons.

Olive Kitteridge was first shown at the 2014 Venice Film Festival. It received excellent reviews from critics. When it premiered on television, it continued to get widespread praise. Most recently, Cholodenko directed and was an executive producer for the first two episodes of the Hulu series The Girl from Plainville. This series starred Elle Fanning.
