Early Life and Discovery
Lisa Hunt was born in New York and grew up singing gospel music. She later studied music at The City College of New York.
Her big break came in a surprising way. The Italian singer Zucchero Fornaciari found her singing on the street in Covent Garden, London. He had missed his flight back to Italy and decided to walk around. He saw Hunt performing and was so impressed that he watched her for an hour, filming her with his camera.
Zucchero told her, "You are too good, you absolutely have to come to Italy." He got her phone number, and within a month, she was in Italy. She even appeared in his music video for the song Con le mani.
Career with Zucchero
For over 15 years, Hunt toured with Zucchero as a backup singer. She contributed to his successful album Oro Incenso & Birra. She is especially remembered for her performance on the song Madre dolcissima.
She was also a key part of Zucchero's first live album, Live at the Kremlin. This was a historic concert because it was one of the first times a Western artist performed in the Soviet Union after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Solo Music and Collaborations
In the 1990s, Hunt started her solo career. Her first album, A Little Piece of Magic, was released in 1989. It included two songs with Zucchero. Hunt wanted the album to have all original songs, but her producers asked for at least one cover version. So, she included a cover of "Lady Marmalade".
She went on to release three more albums: Can You Feel It (1997), Forever Soul (2000), and The Very Best of Forever Soul (2003). By 2015, she had reportedly sold over a million copies of her own CDs.
Hunt also worked with many other artists.
- She sang on the song "Come Down" with Australian singer Diesel.
- She was the singer on several songs by the British electronic group Lovestation.
- Her song "The Joint is Jumpin'" became a dance hit in the United States.
- Another dance single, "Unity," which she recorded with John Rizzo and Wanda Houston, also made it onto the U.S. Billboard charts in 2008.
Hunt's voice has also been featured in movies and TV shows. She sang on the soundtrack for the movie Snack Bar Budapest and for the HBO show Subway Stories. She also appeared in several off-Broadway musicals, including Dreamgirls.
Personal Life
Hunt has said that her favorite city in the world is Venice, Italy. In December 1989, she married an Australian rock guitarist in her hometown of New York City.
