Lisa Jane Stansfield (born 11 April 1966) is an English singer, songwriter, and actress famous for her soulful voice. She became a global star in 1989 with her hit song "All Around the World".
Her career started in 1980 after she won a singing contest. She later formed a band called Blue Zone before starting her solo career. Her first album, Affection (1989), was a huge success and remains her best-selling album.
Over her career, Stansfield has sold more than 20 million albums. She has won many awards, including three Brit Awards and two Ivor Novello Awards. Early Life and First Steps in Music
Lisa Stansfield was born in Manchester, England. She grew up with her two sisters, Karen and Suzanne. Her family moved to the nearby towns of Heywood and then Rochdale.
From a young age, Lisa loved soul music. She was inspired by artists like Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, and Barry White. This love for soul music would later shape her own singing style.
In 1980, when she was 14, Lisa won a singing competition called Search for a Star. This was the beginning of her journey in the music world. Music Career
1984–1988: Starting with the band Blue Zone
In 1984, Lisa teamed up with her former schoolmates, Ian Devaney and Andy Morris. Together, they formed a band called Blue Zone. They wrote songs and produced a demo tape to show to record labels.
The band released a few singles. Their song "Big Thing" became popular in clubs and on the radio. Another single, "Jackie", was a hit in the United States. The band released one album, Big Thing, in 1988.
1989–1992: Becoming a Global Star
Lisa's big break came in 1989. She was the featured singer on the song "People Hold On" by the group Coldcut. The song was a hit, reaching number 11 in the United Kingdom. Because of its success, the record label Arista Records offered Lisa a solo contract.
Her first solo album, Affection, was released in November 1989. It was a massive success around the world. The album included her most famous song, "All Around the World". This song topped the charts in many countries and made Lisa an international star.
