List of Cree and Naskapi territories in Quebec facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

This article is about the special lands in Quebec that belong to the Cree and Naskapi First Nations. These places are their homes and communities, often called villages or village municipalities. Most of these lands are located within a larger area known as Eeyou Istchee, which is the traditional territory of the Cree people. One special Naskapi community, Kawawachikamach, is located outside of Eeyou Istchee.

Cree Communities in Quebec

The Cree are one of the largest Indigenous groups in North America. In Quebec, they have several communities where their people live and govern themselves. Each Cree community usually has two parts: a "village municipality" (VC) where most people live, and a "land reserved for the Cree" (TC) which is a larger area of traditional land surrounding the village. This setup helps them manage their homes and their ancestral lands.

Chisasibi is a large Cree community located on the eastern shore of James Bay. It is home to the Cree Nation of Chisasibi. The community has its village area and a much larger surrounding land area that is reserved for the Cree.

Eastmain

Eastmain is another Cree community situated on the coast of James Bay, near the mouth of the Eastmain River. The Eastmain First Nation lives here, managing both their village and the surrounding traditional lands.

Whapmagoostui

Whapmagoostui is the northernmost Cree community in Quebec, located on the eastern shore of Hudson Bay. The Whapmagoostui First Nation shares this remote location with the Inuit community of Kuujjuarapik, which is right next door.

Naskapi Community in Quebec

The Naskapi are another Indigenous group in Quebec, closely related to the Cree. They have one main community in the province.

Kawawachikamach

Kawawachikamach is the only Naskapi community in Quebec. It is located near the town of Schefferville. The Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach lives here. Like the Cree communities, Kawawachikamach also has a village area and a larger surrounding land area that is reserved for the Naskapi people. This community is unique because it is not part of the larger Eeyou Istchee territory.
