The governor has important jobs. They must make sure state laws are followed. They can also approve or reject new laws passed by the Nevada Legislature. The governor can call the legislature together at any time for special meetings. They can also grant pardons (forgiveness for a crime) to people, except in cases of treason or impeachment.
A governor serves for four years. Since 1970, a governor can only serve two terms, even if those terms are not back-to-back. If the governor's office becomes empty, the lieutenant governor of Nevada takes over. The current governor is Republican Joe Lombardo. He started his term on January 2, 2023.

The territory had only one governor who was chosen by the president of the United States. His name was James W. Nye. He served from March 22, 1861, until Nevada became a state on December 5, 1864. Before the territory was officially set up, a local group in Genoa chose Isaac Roop as a temporary governor in 1859.
