Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Muisca people were an amazing ancient civilization. They lived in what is now Colombia. Many of their cool artifacts are kept in museums. Most of these treasures are in the Gold Museum in Bogotá. This museum has more golden objects than any other museum in the world!

Other important Muisca finds are in the Archaeology Museum in Sogamoso and the Archaeology Museum in Pasca. Only a few Muisca items are shown outside Colombia. Most of these are tunjos. These are small, special offering pieces used in the Muisca religion.

Muisca Treasures in Colombia

Colombia is home to the largest and most important collections of Muisca artifacts. These museums help us learn a lot about this ancient culture.

The Gold Museum, Bogotá

The Gold Museum in Bogotá is super famous. It has thousands of Muisca objects, mostly made of gold. One of its most important pieces is the Muisca raft. This golden sculpture shows a Muisca chief on a raft with other figures. It represents the famous El Dorado ceremony.

Archaeology Museums in Sogamoso and Pasca

The Archaeology Museum in Sogamoso is another key place. It holds about 3,000 Muisca items. You can also see a replica of the ancient Sun Temple there. This temple was very important to the Muisca.

In Pasca, the Archaeology Museum has its own special collection. It includes a replica of the Muisca raft and even some mummies. Mummies are preserved bodies that give us clues about how the Muisca lived and honored their dead.

Muisca Artifacts Around the World

While most Muisca treasures are in Colombia, some can be found in museums in other countries. These items often include tunjos, which are small, flat figures made of gold or tumbaga (a gold and copper alloy). They were used as offerings.

Notable Collections in the United States

Several museums in the United States have Muisca pieces. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City has 22 items, including tunjos, pendants, and even a mask. The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas has 21 objects, also mostly tunjos and different types of jewelry like noserings and earrings.

Other U.S. museums with Muisca artifacts include the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Brooklyn Museum. These collections help people around the world appreciate the amazing artistry of the Muisca.

Muisca Items in Europe and Beyond

A few Muisca artifacts have also traveled to Europe and other parts of the world. For example, the British Museum in London, United Kingdom, has a tunjo and a Muisca mummy. The Hunt Museum in Limerick, Ireland, also has a tunjo. Even the The Israel Museum in Jerusalem, Israel, has a Muisca pectoral (a chest ornament).

These international collections, though smaller, show how far the Muisca's artistic legacy has reached.
