Jamaica is a beautiful island country, and like any country, it has many places where people live! These places are called settlements, and they can be big cities, busy towns, or smaller villages. This article will tell you about some of the most populated settlements in Jamaica, from the biggest cities to the smaller communities.

What do these words mean?
When we talk about places where people live, we use different words like city, town, or village. Here’s what they mean in Jamaica:
- City: A place becomes an official city only when the government passes a special law called an Act of Parliament. Only three places in Jamaica have this special title:
- Kingston became a city in 1802 because it was very important, even more so than the old capital, Spanish Town.
- Montego Bay was given city status in 1980.
- Portmore became a city in 2018.
Being a city doesn't always mean it has the most people, but it's a special honor and can give the local government more power to make decisions.
- Town/Village: The Statistical Institute of Jamaica says an urban area (a place with lots of buildings and people) is any area with 2,000 or more residents. A town is usually a larger urban area, and a village is a smaller one.
- Neighbourhood: These are smaller parts or sections within a city, town, or village. Think of them as smaller communities inside a bigger place.
