The Covered Bridges of Bradford, Sullivan and Lycoming Counties are a group of seven old and special bridges in northcentral Pennsylvania, USA. These bridges are famous because they are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are important historical places that need to be protected. They were added to this list on July 24, 1980.
One of these bridges is in Bradford County. Three bridges are in Lycoming County, and three more are in Sullivan County. The bridges in Sullivan County are the oldest, as all three were built around 1850. The newest bridge is the Buttonwood Covered Bridge in Lycoming County, built in 1898.
The Buttonwood bridge is also the shortest, measuring about 63 feet (19.4 meters). The Hillsgrove Covered Bridge in Sullivan County is the longest, stretching about 171 feet (52.1 meters). The Hillsgrove bridge was the first of these seven to be added to the National Register of Historic Places, back on July 2, 1973.
What are Covered Bridges?
Covered bridges are like tunnels for cars and people, but they are made of wood! They have roofs and walls that protect the wooden parts of the bridge from rain, snow, and sun. This helps the bridges last much longer. Most covered bridges were built a long time ago, often in the 1800s.
