Potato Museums in Austria

The Waldviertler Erdäpfelwelt is a fun museum in Schweiggers, Austria. Its name means "Waldviertler potato world." You can find it inside the town hall. This museum has cool interactive displays. It shows the history of potatoes and how we use them today.

Potato Museums in Belgium

Belgium has a couple of interesting potato museums:

  • The Musée vivant de la pomme de terre is in Genappe. This name means "Living Museum of the Potato." It is part of the Wallonia Botanical Gardens. The museum also has a collection of onions from northern Europe.
  • The Frietmuseum in Bruges is all about chips! (In America, they call them fries.) This museum is in one of Bruges' oldest buildings. It was built way back in 1399.

  • The Canadian Potato Museum is in O'Leary, Prince Edward Island. It says it has the world's largest collection of potato items. It also has a special Potato Hall of Fame. A giant potato stands at the entrance. It is 14 feet (about 4.3 meters) tall and made of fiberglass. Visitors can learn about potatoes from their wild beginnings to how they are farmed now.
  • Potato World is another museum all about potatoes. It is located in Florenceville-Bristol, New Brunswick. This town is known as the "french fry capital of the world."

Potato Museums in Denmark

  • The Danmarks Kartoffelmuseum is in Otterup. This means "Danish Potato Museum." It is part of the Hofmansgave estate. The Hofmansgaves were important for making potatoes popular in Denmark. Back then, potatoes were sometimes called "German lumps."

Potato Museums in France

  • Moulin Gentrey is in Harsault. This building was a starch mill from 1870. It now has a small potato museum inside. You can learn about how starch was made for the textile industry.

Germany has several museums dedicated to potatoes:

  • The Deutsches Kartoffelmuseum is in Fußgönheim. This means "German Potato Museum." It is in an old synagogue. It is right next to the Fußgönheim Agricultural Museum. This potato museum opened in 1987.
  • Das Kartoffelmuseum is in Munich. This museum opened in 1996. It is run by the Otto Eckart Foundation. This foundation works for Pfanni GmbH, which is part of Unilever.
