List of rivers of Honduras facts for kids
Honduras is a country in Central America with many important rivers. These rivers flow through different parts of the country. They are very important for the economy, for farming, and for people's daily lives. Some rivers are entirely within Honduras, while others form borders with neighboring countries like Nicaragua and El Salvador.
One of the most important rivers is the Ulúa. It flows for about 400 kilometers (250 miles). This river goes through a very important farming area called the Valle de Sula. Many other rivers start in the mountains and flow north into the Caribbean Sea. On the other side of Honduras, rivers like the Choluteca River flow into the Pacific Ocean. The Choluteca River even runs through the capital city, Tegucigalpa. During Hurricane Mitch in 1998, this river caused a lot of damage in the city.
The Comisión Permanente de Contingencias (which means Permanent Contingency Commission) is a group that helps keep people safe. They give out warnings when rivers might overflow their banks.
This list of rivers is organized by where their water ends up. This is called a drainage basin. We will look at rivers that flow into the Caribbean Sea first, then those that flow into the Pacific Ocean.
