List of tallest buildings in Phoenix facts for kids
Phoenix is the capital city of Arizona, a state in the southwestern United States. This exciting city is home to many tall buildings, also known as high-rises. There are 58 buildings in Phoenix that are taller than 200 feet (about 61 meters).
The very tallest building in Phoenix is the Chase Tower. It has 40 stories and reaches a height of 483 feet (147 meters). It was finished in 1972 and is also the tallest building in all of Arizona! The second tallest building in Phoenix is the U.S. Bank Center, standing at 407 feet (124 meters). Most of Arizona's tallest buildings, 22 out of 25, are right here in Phoenix.
The story of tall buildings in Phoenix began in 1924 with the Luhrs Building. It was 138 feet (42 meters) tall and had ten floors. Then, in 1927, the Westward Ho was built. This 16-story building, 208 feet (63 meters) tall, was the city's tallest for a long time, until 1960.
In the early 1960s, a building boom happened in Midtown Phoenix. Six new high-rises were built, including the Phoenix Corporate Center. The 1970s brought more tall buildings to Downtown Phoenix. This included the Chase Tower and the U.S. Bank Center, which are still the two tallest.
Another big building period was from 1980 to the early 1990s. During this time, nine of the city's current 25 tallest buildings were constructed. These include the U-Haul Tower and BMO Tower.
After that, building slowed down for a while. But in 2007, Downtown Phoenix started growing fast again. Five more high-rises were added in just three years. This included the huge Sheraton Grand Phoenix hotel and the 34-story 44 Monroe apartment building.
Today, the Downtown Phoenix skyline is still growing quickly. Many new high-rises are being built, or plans for them have been approved. The newest tall building to be finished is Derby, a residential tower. It has 21 stories and is 240 feet (73 meters) tall.
