List of tallest buildings in Phoenix facts for kids
Phoenix, the capital city of Arizona, is home to many tall buildings. In fact, 23 buildings in Phoenix stand at least 295 feet (90 meters) high! The very tallest building in Phoenix is the Chase Tower. It was finished in 1972 and has 40 floors, reaching a height of 483 feet (147 meters). It's also the tallest building in all of Arizona.
The second-tallest building in Phoenix is the U.S. Bank Center, which is 407 feet (124 meters) tall. Out of the 25 tallest buildings in Arizona, 22 are right here in Phoenix. However, none of Phoenix's buildings are among the very tallest in the United States.
The story of tall buildings in Phoenix began in 1924 with the Luhrs Building. It was 138 feet (42 meters) tall and had ten floors. Then came the Westward Ho in 1927. This building, with 16 floors and standing 208 feet (63 meters) tall, was the city's tallest until 1960.
The 1960s brought a building boom to Midtown Phoenix. Six new high-rises were built, including the Phoenix Corporate Center and 4000 North Central Avenue. In the 1970s, new development returned to Downtown Phoenix. Five big high-rises were completed, including the two tallest buildings we know today: Chase Tower and the U.S. Bank Center.
Another busy building period happened from 1980 to the early 1990s. During this time, 9 of the city's current 25 tallest buildings were constructed. These include Century Link Tower, BMO Tower, and Renaissance Square.
Building slowed down for a while, but then picked up again around 2007. Downtown Phoenix gained five more high-rises in just three years. These included the huge 1,000-room Sheraton Grand Phoenix hotel and the 34-story 44 Monroe apartment building.
Today, the Downtown Phoenix skyline is growing very fast! Many new high-rises are being built, approved, or planned. The most recently finished tall building is Derby, a residential tower. It has 21 stories and is 240 feet (73 meters) tall.
