How Tysons Grew Up
Tysons started to develop in 1952. The United States Army built a 330-foot (101-meter) microwave transmission tower there. This tower, called the Tysons Corner Communications Tower, was built on the highest spot in Fairfax County. It helped send important messages between Washington, D.C., and government places far away. This was for emergency plans to keep the government running.
Back then, Tysons was just a quiet crossroads. But things changed in 1961. The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) finished its main office nearby in Langley. This made companies that work with defense (like making military equipment) open offices in Tysons.
In 1962, a company called WestGroup got permission to build office parks. These were some of the first big office areas in Tysons. That same year, plans were approved for Tysons Corner Center, a large shopping mall. It opened its doors in 1968.
By the mid-1980s, local leaders allowed buildings to be taller than 75 feet (23 meters). They even thought about building "gateways" at main roads. These would be pairs of buildings up to 22 stories tall. Officials wanted Tysons to become Fairfax County's "new downtown." They even suggested a maximum height of 730 feet (223 meters) for future buildings.
In June 2010, Fairfax County leaders approved a new plan. They wanted to change Tysons from a place where everyone drives to a "walkable city." This means people could walk to shops and offices. By 2011, Tysons had a huge amount of office space. It was more than many big cities in the U.S.
Building more tall structures in Tysons got a big boost. This happened when the Silver Line of the Washington Metro opened. This train line has four stations right in Tysons.
The Capital One Headquarters, finished in 2018, has the tallest building in Tysons. It's also the tallest building in the whole Washington metropolitan area. It stands 470 feet (143 meters) tall. Only the Washington Monument is taller in the area. Another building, 1775 Tysons Boulevard, was the first in Tysons to get a special "platinum" rating for being very energy efficient.
Tysons is also a major shopping area. It has the 8th largest retail space in the United States. Many big companies have their main offices here. These include Freddie Mac, Capital One, Hilton Worldwide, Booz Allen Hamilton, and Gannett Company.
