The Little Auglaize River is a river in northwest Ohio, United States. It flows for about 47 miles (76 kilometers). This river is a tributary of the Auglaize River. A tributary is a smaller stream or river that flows into a larger one. The Little Auglaize River helps drain water from a mostly rural farming area. All the land that drains into this river is part of the larger Lake Erie watershed.

Discovering the Little Auglaize River

The Little Auglaize River is an important part of the natural landscape in Ohio. It collects water from rain and snow over a wide area. This water then travels through the river system. Eventually, it reaches much larger bodies of water.

Where Does It Start?

The Little Auglaize River begins in the southern part of Van Wert County, Ohio. This is about 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of the city of Van Wert, Ohio. From its starting point, the river flows generally towards the northeast. It passes by small towns like Middle Point, Ohio.

Its Journey to the Auglaize

As the river continues its journey, it reaches western Putnam County, Ohio, near Ottoville, Ohio. Here, the Little Auglaize River changes direction. For its last 10 miles (16 kilometers), it turns and flows north-northwest. Finally, it joins the Auglaize River from the south. This meeting point is close to Melrose, Ohio, in eastern Paulding County, Ohio.

What is a Watershed?

A watershed is like a giant funnel for water. It is an area of land where all the water, from rain or melting snow, drains into a single river, lake, or ocean. The Little Auglaize River is part of the larger Lake Erie watershed. This means all the water in the Little Auglaize River eventually flows into the Auglaize River, then into the Maumee River, and finally into Lake Erie.

Why Rivers Matter

Rivers like the Little Auglaize are very important. They provide water for farms and wildlife. They also help shape the land over many years. The health of a river affects the plants and animals that live in and around it. It also impacts the communities that rely on its water.
