Little Russia was a small area located in Tottenham, a part of London, England. It was situated right on the northern edge of the London Borough of Haringey, next to Edmonton. The area mainly included streets like Pretoria Road, Durban Road, and Lorenco Road, which were west of the railway line between Silver Street and White Hart Lane train stations.
Why Was It Called Little Russia?
The name "Little Russia" became popular in the early 1900s. This was because many Russian immigrants moved to the area. A large number of Russians settled there after they had to leave their home country. This happened especially after the 1917 Russian Revolution. They were seeking a new place to live.
Over time, Little Russia became known as a very busy and active part of North London. The local police often patrolled the area in pairs for safety. Most of the buildings in Little Russia were rebuilt in the 1970s. This changed the look of the neighborhood.
Little Russia in Media
In March 2009, a Moscow-born novelist and broadcaster named Zinovy Zinik visited the area. He created a radio show called The Ghosts of Little Russia. It was broadcast on BBC Radio 3. This show explored the history and memories of the unique neighborhood.
