The Little Smoky River is a cool river in west-central Alberta, Canada. It's like a smaller friend to the bigger Smoky River. This river is an important part of the natural landscape in Alberta.

Where the Little Smoky River Flows

The Little Smoky River starts in the lower hills of the Canadian Rockies. This is west of a town called Grande Cache. From there, it flows towards the north-east.

As it leaves the hills and reaches the flat open land, the river starts to meander. This means it makes lots of twists and turns, like a snake. It then flows north until it joins the Smoky River. This meeting point is south of the town of Watino.

Once the Little Smoky River's water joins the Smoky River, it continues a long journey. Its waters travel through the Peace River, then the Slave River, and finally the huge Mackenzie River. All these rivers carry the water all the way to the Arctic Ocean!

River Flow and Nearby Towns

The Little Smoky River usually carries about 25 cubic meters of water every second. That's a lot of water! In the spring, when snow melts, it can carry more than 100 cubic meters per second.

Two towns are located near the Little Smoky River. These are Valleyview and Little Smoky.

What are Tributaries?

A tributary is a smaller stream or river that flows into a larger river. Think of them as little branches joining a bigger tree trunk. The Little Smoky River has many tributaries that add water to it.

Some of the rivers and creeks that flow into the Little Smoky River include:

  • Iosegun River
  • Waskahigan River
  • Goose River
  • Sturgeon Creek (which flows from Sturgeon Lake)
  • Snipe Creek (which flows from Snipe Lake)
