Liucura is a small community, also known as a hamlet (which means a very small village), located in southern Chile. It sits in the eastern part of the mighty Andes mountains. This quiet place is found in Malleco Province, which is part of the Araucanía Region.

Liucura is special because of its unique location. It's very close to the border between Chile and Argentina. It also lies near where the famous Biobío River begins its journey.

Where is Liucura?

Liucura is situated in a mountainous area. It is east of the main chain of the Andes. This means it's nestled among the tall peaks and valleys of this huge mountain range. The nearest city is Lonquimay, which is also to the west of Liucura.

The Biobío River's Start

The hamlet is in the highest part of the Biobío River's basin. A river basin is the area of land where all the water drains into a particular river. For the Biobío River, this means Liucura is close to its very beginning.

The Continental Divide

Liucura is also right next to the Pacific-Atlantic continental divide. This is an imaginary line that separates the land where water flows towards the Pacific Ocean from the land where water flows towards the Atlantic Ocean. If a raindrop falls on one side of this line in Liucura, it will eventually reach the Pacific. If it falls on the other side, it will travel all the way to the Atlantic!

Border Crossing and Route 181

Liucura is an important spot for travel between Chile and Argentina. It is located along Chile Route 181. This road is a key route that connects the two countries.

Pino Hachado Pass

Right next to Liucura is the international crossing called Pino Hachado Pass. A "pass" is a low point in a mountain range that allows people to travel through it. Pino Hachado Pass is a well-known mountain pass. It allows cars and trucks to cross the border between Chile and Argentina. This makes Liucura a small but important gateway for travelers and trade.

Life in a Mountain Hamlet

Life in a hamlet like Liucura is often peaceful and connected to nature. With only about 155 people living there (as of 2017), it's a very small community. People living here are likely used to the mountain environment. They might enjoy outdoor activities. The nearby border crossing also brings some activity to the area.
