The Llandudno Cable Car is a fun attraction in the seaside town of Llandudno, Wales. It's a special type of cable car that carries people up the Great Orme mountain. The journey is about 1 mile long and offers amazing views!

The cable car first opened in the summer of 1969. It has been running ever since, giving visitors a unique way to see the area. From the cabins, you can look out over the Irish Sea towards places like Rhyl and even the Isle of Man. You can also see the beautiful mountains of Snowdonia National Park.

There are 20 colorful cabins in total, painted red, yellow, orange, light blue, and purple. They leave each station about every minute, so you never have to wait long. At its highest point, the cable car travels about 80 feet (24 meters) above the ground. Nine tall towers, called pylons, hold up the strong cable that carries the cabins.

Where is the Cable Car Located?

The cable car has two main stations. The lower station is found on Aberdeen Hill, inside the lovely Happy Valley Gardens. You can easily spot this station from the promenade and the Llandudno Pier. However, getting to this station involves some steps, so it's not easy for wheelchair users.

The upper station is located right next to the very top of the Great Orme mountain. Because it's so high up, you can see the cable car from many different spots around Llandudno.

Why the Cable Car Might Close

For your safety, the Llandudno Cable Car cannot operate in very strong winds. If wind speeds go over 22 miles per hour (35 km/h), the cable car has to close. Even if it feels calm down in Happy Valley, the wind can be much stronger and less predictable at the top of the Great Orme. This means the cable car might close suddenly, sometimes for just a few minutes, or even for a whole day.

The cable cars also cannot run during thunderstorms. They might also close if the rain is too heavy. The cable car usually operates from the start of the Easter holidays until the end of the October half-term school holiday.
