A Hub for Railways
This village grew up around its railway station, which is called Llandudno Junction. This station is a very important meeting point for train lines. It connects the main railway line from Crewe to Holyhead with the Llandudno-Blaenau Ffestiniog line.
Some trains go directly from Manchester to Llandudno. However, if you are traveling from places like London, Cardiff, or Holyhead to Llandudno, you usually need to change trains here.
Past Railway Operations
In the past, Llandudno Junction was more than just a place for passengers. It had a large depot where steam locomotives were serviced and repaired. There were also many facilities for handling goods that came by train. This railway depot was known as 6G. Today, a new part of the A546 road, called "Ffordd 6G Road," crosses over where the depot used to be.
The area where the old depot and goods yard once stood has been redeveloped. Now, you can find a business park, places to eat fast food, a leisure centre, and a Cineworld cinema. There is also a Tesco supermarket and a Lidl store in Llandudno Junction.
Changes in Local Jobs
Over the last part of the 20th century, the types of jobs available in Llandudno Junction changed a lot. This was because the railway depots closed down. Also, a big factory that made electrical goods, called Hotpoint, closed. Part of the old factory site is now being planned for new car dealerships.
Another part of the factory site was bought by the Welsh Government. In 2007, they started building a new office there. This office now employs about 525 people. Around 100 of these jobs, related to tourism, transport, and business, moved here from Cardiff. The building was officially ready in May 2010.
Local Landmarks and Schools
The Old Station Hotel is a well-known building. It stands right across from the railway station. Locally, people sometimes call it 'The Killer' or, in Welsh, 'Y Killer'.
In September 2016, the two primary schools in Llandudno Junction joined together. These were Ysgol Maelgwn and Ysgol Nant-y-Coed. They formed a new school called Ysgol Awel y Mynydd.
Sports in the Village
Llandudno Junction F.C. is the local football team for the village. In the past, the village was home to another football team called Borough United F.C.. This team even won the Welsh Cup.
