Llanerch is a small community located in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It sits right on the edge of two townships: Haverford Township and Upper Darby Township. You can find Llanerch where major roads like U.S. Route 1, Pennsylvania Route 3, and Darby Road meet.

A Look Back at Llanerch's History

Before European settlers arrived, the land where Llanerch now stands was home to the Lenape tribe, a Native American people. Later, the land became part of the large area given to William Penn by the King of England. Welsh Quakers, who were a religious group from Wales, were among the first European settlers here. You can still see their influence today in many local road names, like "Llandillo" and "Llandaff." The name Llanerch itself comes from an old Welsh word for an open space or clearing.

For a long time, until the 1890s, Llanerch was mostly undeveloped. Only a few families lived there. But things changed when railways started to grow in nearby Philadelphia. Llanerch became an important meeting point for trains traveling between the big city and smaller towns. This led to more people moving to the area.

The Battle of Llanerch Crossing

In 1895, a famous event called "The Battle of Llanerch Crossing" happened here. It was a big disagreement between different railway companies about who owned certain land. The dispute ended up going all the way to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. Today, there's a special park called Llanerch Crossing with a mural and markers. These tell the story of this important historical event.

Llanerch is served by local community groups. These include the Haverford Township Police Department, the Haverford Township School District, and the Llanerch Volunteer Fire Company.

Places of Worship in Llanerch

The community is home to some historic churches. The Llanerch Presbyterian Church was built in 1912. There's also the former St. Andrew's Brookline Methodist Church, which was built in 1898. This building is no longer used as a church.

Llanerch in Movies

Llanerch has even been featured in a movie! Several scenes from the film Silver Linings Playbook were filmed here. For example, the famous diner scene was shot at The Llanerch Diner, which is located on U.S. Route 1.
