Loch Eileen is a beautiful freshwater lake found high up in the Chiwaukum Mountains in Chelan County, Washington. It's part of a special area called the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. If you want to visit the Klonaqua Lakes area nearby, you'll need a special permit.
This lake is located in a very high, open area that was shaped by glaciers long ago. The land around it is mostly rocky and open, but you can find pretty heather and other wild flowers. There are also some larch trees, which are a type of pine tree.
Discovering Loch Eileen
Loch Eileen is one of several lakes known as the Scottish Lakes. Other lakes in this group include Lake Julius, Lake Donald, and Lake Ethel. These lakes were all given their unique names around the year 1900.
Who Named the Lake?
The names for these lakes were chosen by a man named Albert Hale Sylvester. He was a topographer, which means he mapped out land for the United States Geological Survey. Sylvester worked a lot in the North Cascades National Park Complex. He often named places after his female family members and friends. Loch Eileen was named by Sylvester after the daughter of a Forest Service Ranger named Jason William.
