Loch Monar is a beautiful freshwater loch located in the Scottish Highlands. It sits at the very top of a valley called Glen Strathfarrar in Scotland. Since the 1960s, this loch has been used as a reservoir.

It was dammed to help create electricity. This is part of a big project called the Affric-Beauly hydro-electric power scheme.

What is Loch Monar?

Loch Monar is a long, narrow body of water. It stretches for about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles). The loch is fed by many small streams. These streams flow down from the hills around it.

The main river flowing out of Loch Monar is called the Garbh-uisge. This river later joins another one, the Uisge Misgeach. Together, they form the River Farrar.

The Area Around the Loch

The land around Loch Monar is very wild and mountainous. It is a remote area, meaning it's far from towns and cities. This makes it a great place for nature and hiking.

Famous Mountains Nearby

Several tall mountains, known as Munros, surround Loch Monar. A Munro is a Scottish mountain that is over 3,000 feet (914.4 meters) high. Some of these impressive peaks include:

These mountains offer amazing views. They are popular with experienced hikers.

Hydro-Electric Power

Loch Monar plays an important role in making green energy. The dam built in the 1960s helps to control the water flow. This water is then used to power turbines. These turbines create electricity without burning fossil fuels. This type of power is called hydroelectricity. It is a clean and renewable energy source.
